Backsell is a local-first macOS app for DJs and radio hosts. Backsell has no cloud service, user accounts, analytics, or tracking.
What we collect
Nothing. We do not collect users’ song libraries, prompts, generated text, API keys, purchase history, or other personal data. There is no Backsell server in the loop.
Information stored on your Mac
Backsell may store preferences, recently entered manual tracks, an imported setlist, optional generation history, and a local song archive. The archive can contain track title and artist, source references, confidence or provenance, and facts you confirmed. You can inspect, pin, delete, clear, and export it. None of this local data is uploaded to Backsell.
Keys for optional third-party AI providers are stored only in macOS Keychain. They are not stored in preferences, diagnostics, archives, or exports.
AI processing
When Apple Intelligence is available and selected, generation occurs on-device through Apple’s Foundation Models framework. If you connect an AI provider, requests travel directly from your Mac to that provider. Backsell does not proxy or receive them.
Before a third-party AI request, Backsell asks you to allow that individual connection to receive the current track title and artist, persona settings, and prompt instructions. Permission for one connection does not authorize another. Changing its Base URL or optional proxy revokes permission. You can turn permission off at any time while keeping Apple Intelligence and the local fallback available. Provider and proxy terms and privacy policies apply to data they process.
Provider requests require HTTPS. Plain HTTP is allowed only for a service on your own loopback interface. Credentialed requests are not redirected to a different scheme, host, or port. If no model or key is available, a provider fails, or the Mac is offline, Backsell can generate a deterministic local fallback without sending the request anywhere.
Song metadata
If you separately enable MusicBrainz lookups in Archive settings, Backsell can send a recognized track title and artist to the public MusicBrainz service to look for source-backed album and year metadata. You can turn this permission off at any time. Backsell does not send audio, setlists, or song libraries. MusicBrainz’s terms and privacy policy apply.
Apple Music and Serato
Backsell can read now-playing title and artist information broadcast by Apple Music.
The optional, unofficial Serato connector works only after you explicitly select a folder. Backsell receives read-only access and reads compatible history metadata such as track title, artist, deck, played state, BPM, key, and session identifiers. It does not modify Serato files, scan unrelated folders, require Full Disk Access, inject into another process, or send Serato data to Backsell. Compatibility may change if Serato changes its local data format.
Tracking
Backsell does not track you and contains no third-party tracking SDKs.
Purchases
The non-consumable Backsell Pro purchase is processed by Apple through the Mac App Store. StoreKit entitlement information is used locally to unlock Pro workflows. We never receive payment-card details.
Sharing and retention
We do not receive or sell user data. The app sends only the data described above to a third-party AI connection or MusicBrainz after you separately authorize that recipient. Local data remains until you delete it in Backsell or remove the app’s local data. Third-party providers and proxies may retain requests under your agreement with them.
Tracking and children
Backsell does not track users, contains no third-party tracking SDKs, and is not directed at children.
