Tianjin mahjong scoring — the fan table

Tianjin has its own mahjong dialect, and English-language references for it barely exist. This is the fan table and the scoring rules, as implemented in the Tianjin Mahjong Scorer app.

The fan table

TermReading What it means
混吊hùndiàoWin waiting on the pair while holding one hún (wild tile).
素提溜sùtíliūA clean win using no wild tiles at all — the plainest hand.
杠开gàngkāiWin on the replacement tile drawn after a kong.
捉伍zhuōwǔWaiting on 5-wan with 4-wan and 6-wan (wan suit only).
lóng123-456-789 in one suit — a pure straight, the “dragon”.
本混龙běnhùnlóngYour dragon's suit matches this round's wild-tile suit.

How scoring works

  • Hand fans multiply — only Zhuōwǔ + Lóng add up (3 + 4 = 7).
  • Kongs score separately: exposed 1 fan, concealed 2 fan.
  • Dealer and each chain double the total, up to ×8.
  • Total = (hand + kong) × dealer multiplier. The winner collects from all three players.

One thing that catches people out: there is no ron (winning off a discard) in Tianjin mahjong. Every win is self-drawn, and the winner collects from all three of the other players.

Tianjin Mahjong Scorer

Scores the Tianjin dialect of mahjong correctly — a ruleset almost nothing else supports.
